Master Planning underway for Subi East with major demolition milestone reached

  • Above-ground demolition works complete and former grandstands removed at Subiaco Oval
  • Iconic project will create a vibrant new gateway to Subiaco, while celebrating the area’s history and heritage
  • Community invited to share their stories of Subiaco as part of first phase of consultation
  • Master Planning for the Subi East project now to begin
  • A key milestone in the delivery of a vibrant new inner-city community at Subi East has been reached, with the completion of above-ground demolition works at Subiaco Oval and the beginning of Master Planning for the area.

One of the biggest demolition projects ever undertaken in Western Australia, the former grandstands, light towers and associated buildings have now been removed and work will now focus on the removal of below-ground infrastructure.

The Master Planning process will develop the detailed long-term plan for Subi East, providing a roadmap to guide future growth and development including comprehensive information on the site’s layout, development type and public spaces while building on the Vision Concept released in January.

Over the past 18 months, the State Government has conducted an on-line survey, sent to 23,000 households, businesses and visitors, hosted community pop-up sessions attended by more than 180 local residents and undertaken extensive engagement around plans for Subi East.

The independent online survey found more than 70 per cent of people were positive about the Subi East project.

The next stage of the Master Planning process is again offering the community a chance to have their say, with an invitation to share memories and stories of Subiaco. This feedback will help DevelopmentWA understand, directly from the community, key themes that could help shape place-making opportunities and help inform the Master Plan.

There will be a number of opportunities for community feedback as the draft Master Plan progresses, including online engagement and workshops. DevelopmentWA also will be opening a project office shortly at Subiaco Square, near Subiaco Station.

As stated by Planning Minister Rita Saffioti:

“Subi East will be one of the most significant Western Australian urban redevelopment projects ever undertaken, and will see the transformation of 35ha of land on the doorstep of the Perth CBD into a thriving community focussed inner-city village.

“Feedback in the lead-up to the Master Planning process has indicated broad support from the wider community for Subi East, which will breathe new life into one of Perth’s oldest and best-loved suburbs.

“The Master Planning process will allow us to consider some of the feedback and additional matters raised during engagement to date.

“The demolition of the remaining grandstands at Subiaco Oval marks a major milestone in the development and delivery of Subi East, which aims to deliver an iconic new gateway for Subiaco.
