Masterplan to unlock Mid-West’s iconic Moresby Range

  • McGowan Government to invest $30,000 to develop a Moresby Range Conservation Park Eco Tourism and Recreation Masterplan
  • Masterplan to identify high value attractions, potential recreational opportunities, cultural experiences and access requirements to open up the park to the public
  • The McGowan Government is partnering with the Shire of Chapman Valley to activate the Moresby Range, near Geraldton, as an affordable and accessible nature-based tourism and cultural experience.

The Moresby Range’s iconic landscape forms part of the identity of the Chapman Valley and Geraldton communities.  Despite its beauty and appeal there are no campgrounds, trails, recreational opportunities, cultural experiences or public access of any kind.

The State Government has committed $30,000 to develop a Moresby Range Conservation Park Eco Tourism and Recreation Masterplan, with the Shire of Chapman Valley investing a further $15,000 towards the masterplan.

The masterplan will identify high value attractions, potential recreational opportunities, cultural experiences and access requirements to open the park to the public.

The masterplan is expected to be completed by June 2020.

As stated by Regional Development Minister Alannah MacTiernan:

“The Moresby Range is the dominant iconic landscape forming part of the local identity of the Chapman Valley and Geraldton communities.

“Despite its beauty and appeal, there are currently no campgrounds, trails, recreational opportunities, cultural experiences or public access of any kind.

“We are proud to be part of this project that will help drive tourism in the Mid West, supporting the local economy and jobs.”

As stated by Environment Minister Stephen Dawson:

“This masterplan represents significant opportunities for a range of visitor experiences, including bush walking and camping in the Moresby Range Conservation Park, which is managed by the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions.

“It is wonderful to see the partnership between different agencies bringing to fruition new recreation and visitor opportunities in a park that is close to Chapman Valley, Geraldton and Northampton.

“I look forward to seeing the future development of visitor facilities, experiences and opportunities in this park.”

As stated by Agricultural Region MLC Laurie Graham:

“Both the Shire of Chapman Valley and the City of Greater Geraldton communities have voiced their desire for accessing the Moresby Range.

“Development of the park will add to the diversity of product on offer in the Mid-West and build on the WA Road Trip campaign.

“By creating a suite of products, the Mid-West is better able to attract visitors, to stay in the region longer.”
