The Aussie athletes are through to the semifinals and Football Queensland, with the support of Council, will be setting up a live site with a big screen at Jezzine Barracks on Wednesday night for the must-win game against England.
Community and Cultural Development Committee chairperson Ann-Maree Greaney said she was expecting a passionate crowd to come along and cheer on the team.
“Hundreds of people turned out to the nail-biting quarterfinal win against France on the weekend and we are expecting another good turnout for the game on Wednesday,” Cr Greaney said.
“The Matildas have made sporting history by being the first Australian team to reach the semifinals of a World Cup.
“Townsville’s football fans will be cheering on the team as they take on the Lionesses in Sydney and look to book their spot in the final on Sunday.
“Everyone is welcome come along and bring a chair or picnic blanket and enjoy the game live and free on the big screen.
“There will also be free kids’ activities, mini soccer games and giveaways from Football Queensland along with easy parking and food trucks to grab a bite to eat.”
Football Queensland General Manager Northern and Far North and Gulf Declan Carnes said the excitement of the Matildas has generated unprecedented support in the country for women’s football.
“The Matildas run in the Women’s World Cup has inspired a new generation of girls and boys to take part in the world game,” Mr Carnes said.
“The win against France will go down as one of the greatest achievements in Australia’s sporting history and it was special to be able to celebrate the win surrounded by a group of passionate fans.
“It would be great to see a crowd come along and cheer on the Matildas as they get the win over England and progress to the final on Sunday.”
The event is on at Jezzine Barracks tomorrow night (Wednesday 16 August) starting from 7pm.
