South Australia Police (SAPOL) has launched two investigations following the death of a man, 44, after an incident at Mawson Lakes earlier this morning.
Major Crime Investigation Branch detectives are conducting a coronial investigation, and a Commissioner’s inquiry is also under way.
At 5.27am on Sunday 15 July 2024, police were called to a Lightsview address after receiving reports of a man in an agitated state. Police remained with the man until an ambulance arrived, and he was taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital (RAH).
At 11.58pm that night, police responded to a Mawson Lakes address following several 000 calls, with reports of a woman being threatened at that location.
Police attempted to gain entry to the unit but were confronted by a man armed with a sword who had barricaded himself behind the front door.
The responding officers were negotiating with the man to drop the sword and deployed a taser and OC spray unsuccessfully. A short time later a taser was successfully deployed through a small opening in the front door and police gained entry to the unit, restraining the man.
Police saw the man had significant injuries to his limbs and there was a large amount of blood. Police believe these injuries are likely to have been self-inflicted.
Police and ambulance officers attended to the man, and he was taken to the RAH where he later died. The man, a 44 year old from Globe Derby was the same man who police were involved with at Lightsview earlier that day.
A woman, 41, who had barricaded herself in a bedroom of the unit suffered a non-life-threatening injury to her arm and was treated in hospital. The woman is assisting police in the investigation of the man’s death.
The incident was very confronting and police who attended are receiving appropriate support.
Police believe the man and woman are known to each other but don’t believe they were in a current relationship.
The man’s death is being investigated as a Coronial Investigation and a Commissioner’s Inquiry is being undertaken.
