Max the dog has been reunited with his owner after being rescued from underneath a house by NSW SES Wingecaribee Unit volunteers last Friday. Paul Syniuta was the man who army-crawled in to rescue Max.
“I was awake at the time. I was just about to go to bed when the call came through at 2am,” said Paul. “Max’s owner told us that he had chased a wombat underneath the house.”
When NSW SES volunteers arrived at the house, they pulled some panels off the side to get a look at Max. An electrician by trade, Paul offered to crawl in to rescue Max.
“I’ve been underneath plenty of floors over the years, so I offered to go in and get him. It was about 30 cms high and got smaller the further I went,” said Paul.
“I army-crawled up to where Max was and was relieved to see that he wasn’t stuck although he was more interested in the wombat than the food I took with me!”
While Paul was trying to get the dog’s attention, Max’s owner called out his name. The dog took his eyes off the wombat and noticed Paul was there.
“He came over to investigate who I was, and I grabbed him. I passed him out of the side of the house. He was muddy but unharmed. We were pleased to be able to get him out safely.”
