With schools reopening and peak traffic recommencing, Inner West Mayor, Darcy Byrne, has today called on Transport for NSW to do more to prevent the return of unacceptable traffic congestion on Victoria Road and the City West Link.
Mayor Byrne has also announced today the formation of a Community Oversight Panel to provide independent scrutiny of Rozelle Interchange traffic mitigations.
Mayor Byrne said, “With the flood of traffic set to return tomorrow we need Transport for NSW to do more than just empty it out one bucket at a time.
“I’m calling on Transport for NSW to do more than they have so far to prevent the unprecedented congestion we experienced when the Interchange opened.
“Common sense measures that should be implemented right now include, large scale signage directing commuters to the free tunnel connecting the Iron Cove Bridge to the ANZAC Bridge.
“The daily release of real time traffic data, which we’ve been calling for since the start of this traffic fiasco, should be agreed to and published by Transport for NSW right now.
“The transport agency should think again about moving the bus lane on Victoria Road to the outside lane.
“They should also write to all residents in effected areas explaining what mitigations have been implemented and providing advice on how to avoid the worst of the congestion.
“I am worried that without more mitigations and common-sense improvements we will once again see thousands of local residents locked in their suburbs and unable to get to work each morning.”
The Community Oversight Panel is made up of local residents with expertise in traffic management, public transport, construction and community engagement.
