Mayor welcomes action on homelessness

Hobart Lord Mayor Anna Reynolds has welcomed an announcement by the Tasmanian Government that an additional 35 units will be constructed to house the city’s homeless.

She said the announcement by Housing Minister Roger Jaensch that $5 million would be invested in new emergency and short-term housing stock and support services was a positive step toward addressing the growing homelessness crisis facing the Greater Hobart region.

“There has been a lot of discussion in the past few months – which is important in achieving a coordinated response – but what we need now is to put roofs over heads,” Cr Reynolds said.

“Support services and shelters for homeless people in our city are stretched to the limit. This additional funding will provide housing for people who need it most.

“We’re pleased that the state government has been able to reach in-principle agreement with Bethlehem House and Hobart Women’s Shelter to provide much-needed additional housing and we look forward to seeing this implemented as quickly and effectively as possible.”
