Mayoress launches Supernova charity concert

A showcase of Wagga Wagga’s brightest high school stars will headline this year’s Mayoress Charity Concert at the Civic Theatre.

The Supernova concert featuring an array of talented musicians, vocalists and dancers promises to be a performing arts extravaganza in two spectacular shows on Saturday 10 August, 2019.

Wagga Mayoress Jenny Conkey said this year’s concert is focusing on the city’s youth and giving them an opportunity to show off their talents on stage in front of a large audience.

“There are some brilliant young performers in our community and this is an opportunity for them to take centre stage and show us their best,” Mrs Conkey said.

“Often those skills and talents are hidden behind closed doors. I want to give them an opportunity to have the spotlight on them and let them shine like the stars that they are.

“It’s important for the wider community and general public to get behind and support the concert for a number of reasons. This is about our youth achieving good things in the community. All proceeds raised will go to Carevan Wagga Inc.”

The Carevan Wagga project seeks to address community concerns about the disadvantaged and food insecurity. It does this by sharing nutritious meals, good company and practical support for members of Wagga’s community who are in need or vulnerable.

“Many local high school students like to assist Carevan, so the focus this year is very much on our youth,” Mrs Conkey said.

Mrs Conkey stressed the concert is open to all members of the public and urged the community get behind a worthy cause.

“This is a concert for everyone in the community … it’s not just for the performing students’ families to attend. Everyone in the community is invited and I urge them to come along and enjoy a few hours of quality performances,” Mrs Conkey said.

The Mayoress Charity Concert returned to the stage last year after 14 years since the previous event.

Mrs Conkey said the success of the 2018 concert set the precedent for her to ensure another fantastic line-up of local talent for this year’s extravaganza.

Schools involved include Kildare Catholic College, Kooringal High, Mater Dei Catholic College, Mount Austin High, Shepherds Park, The Riverina Anglican College, Wagga Christian College, Wagga High and Willans Hill School.

There will also be performances from students of the Riverina Conservatorium of Music. The Mayoress’ Charity Concert, The SUPERNOVA, is on Saturday, 10 August 2019 at 2pm and 7.30pm at the Civic Theatre Wagga Wagga.
