Sport and Recreation Minister Mick Murray has welcomed Federal Labor’s plans to build a new Western Australian home for surfing at Trigg Beach.
Surfing WA has long sought to establish a home base for the sport of surfing in Western Australia – to grow local participation in the sport and help consolidate WA as an internationally recognised surfing destination.
Surfing WA would relocate to the new $4 million facility, where it would be able to deliver upgraded training programs, better surfing lessons and improved water safety initiatives.
The new home base would assist Surfing WA in its delivery of WA’s four international surfing events, including the iconic Margaret River Pro, as well as smaller local and regional competitions which take place around the State each year.
As noted by Sport and Recreation Minister Mick Murray:
“Surfing WA deserves a dedicated home base which does justice to the popularity of surfing in Western Australia and the thousands of local people who surf each year.
“Importantly this commitment recognises the economic, tourism and job-creating opportunities the sport of surfing brings to the State – with a new home base the next step towards cementing WA as an international surfing hotspot.
“The new home would bring added benefits to the local community – with the facility boosting the ability to attract local competitions, hold water safety programs, and provide a community sporting hub for Trigg and surrounding coastal suburbs.”
As noted by Tourism Minister Paul Papalia:
“Surfing WA not only run local programs and regional events but also play a key role in facilitating the exciting Margaret River Pro, which brings the world’s best surfers to Western Australia to compete.
“High-profile international events such as the Margaret River Pro inject millions of dollars into the economy, which in turn creates jobs.
“A new state-of-the-art headquarters will ensure Surfing WA can continue to attract and inspire thousands of grommets to take up surfing into the future.”
