Memorial Trees to help green Bayside

Residents may soon get the opportunity to have a tree planted in memory of a loved one under Bayside Council’s draft Memorial Policy.

Council’s draft Memorial Policy, which recommends a living memorial in the form of a tree planting in a public place was released at this month’s Council Meeting.

“Our Memorial Policy will give residents the option of creating a living memorial while helping extend the green canopy of Bayside,” Mayor Dr Christina Curry said.

This policy will also help guide future community requests for permanent memorials.

Under the draft policy the memorial tree will be a species approved by Council, with the location determined in consultation with the person requesting the memorial. Costs of the tree and planting will be borne by the applicant

Councillors also agreed the policy should include an option for members of the public who might prefer to donate park or garden seat as a memorial.

An updated draft policy will be presented at a later Council Meeting before it goes on public exhibition.
