Meningococcal case 18 November 2021

A case of invasive meningococcal disease has been notified in a 45-year-old man from metropolitan Adelaide, who has been admitted to hospital in a stable condition.

The strain has been identified as serogroup B.

Multiple people who had close contact with the patient have been identified, and four people have been directed to receive clearance antibiotics.

Meningococcal health information is being distributed to other contacts in accordance with the Invasive MeningococcalDisease Communicable Diseases Network Australia: ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾Guidelines for Public Health Units.

This is the ninth case of invasive meningococcal disease reported in South Australia this year compared to five cases reported at the same time last year. Of the nine cases, five were serogroup W, and four were serogroup B.

A total of five cases were reported in 2020. Of the five cases, three were serogroup B and two were serogroup Y.
