A case of invasive meningococcal disease has been notified in a 67-year-old man from rural South Australia, who is in a stable condition in hospital.
The strain has been identified as serogroup Y.
SA Health has identified multiple people who have had contact with the patient, and one person has been directed to receive clearance antibiotics.
Meningococcal health information has been distributed to contacts in accordance with the Invasive Meningococcal Disease CommunicableDiseases Network Australia: ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾ Guidelines for Public Health Units.
There have been 16 cases of invasive meningococcal disease reported in South Australia this year compared to 18 cases recorded at the same time last year.
Of the 16 cases, 11 have been serogroup B, three were serogroup Y and two were serogroup W.
A total of 34 cases were reported in 2018.
No links have been established between this case and other recent cases.
