Murray River Council has formally launched Moama’s Meninya Street Precinct redevelopment, after resolving to appoint a project manager and local community committee to oversee the delivery of the project.
Set to deliver a number of high-profile precinct-based initiatives, the overall project highlights the central role Meninya St and its immediate surrounds has to play in the future growth and prosperity of Moama.
Murray River Council mayor, Chris Bilkey said council was committed to getting the best outcomes for the community when it comes to redevelopment of the space.
“Council will only get one attempt to upgrade the Meninya Street Precinct, and it needs to be given the resources and time to deliver the best outcome for our community.”
“That’s why we have resolved to appoint a project manager to ensure the project remains on track and a key priority for delivery.”
“The formation of a new section 355 committee of council will also deliver a positive method of involving the community and stakeholders in the project and it’s outcomes.”
“This really will be an exciting time for Moama as the project and all its initiatives come to life,” he said.
Council’s new project manager, with support from the new section 355 committee, will be responsible for delivering the following projects to ensure an integrated connection within the overall precinct area:
• Meninya Street Redevelopment – Streetscape planning and implementation, traffic control, road alignments, parking, creating a “sense of place” and setting the vision for behind the kerb high quality investment.
• Bridge Art Project and associated works – Plan the delivery of the Bridge Art Project, including the gallery on Meninya St and elevated walkways into the bushland behind. The project Includes connectivity to the river, Meninya street and the new Echuca/Moama bridge.
• Moama Beach – Pedestrian links, toilet facilities and finalisation of the beach precinct.
• Horseshoe Lagoon redevelopment and associated works – Pedestrian access elevated along with ground boardwalks and retaining wall infrastructure. Includes potential activation for commercial development.
Council will soon seek nominations from the local community and businesses to join the committee, which will also see representation from councillors and staff.
The Committee will be a designated committee of council under section 355 of the Local Government Act 1993 and will be subject to the provisions of council’s s355 Committee Policy and Guidelines.
