The City of Parramatta has backed an ambitious plan to create a new housing and entertainment precinct at Rosehill and better connect it to the rest of Sydney with Metro West.
“This is a true city-shaping project – not just for Parramatta but for Sydney,” said Lord Mayor Cr Pierre Esber.
“This is not just building a Metro – this will build a city within a city, a new city the size of Albury-Wodonga.”
Cr Esber said adding as many as two additional stations to the Metro line between Parramatta and Sydney Olympic Park, including one at Rosehill, was an investment that would pay dividends for the next 150 years.
“We’ve been pushing for stations in this area from day dot and common sense has prevailed,” Cr Esber said.
“Metro West will be our generation’s Sydney Harbour Bridge, forever changing how people move around Sydney.
“With these additional stations, we will have the central plank needed to unlock tens of thousands of new homes just a short Metro ride from our two biggest CBDs and the jobs and growth of the future.
“Nobody is better placed to understand the needs of our growing community than this Council. We look forward to being part of the discussions that shape this vision from here in and the supporting infrastructure beyond just transport needed to make it a success.
“This revamped Metro plan combined with the full delivery of Parramatta Light Rail will connect people to the reasons Parramatta is of growing global significance – five universities, a growing arts and cultural district and a world-class medical, education and research precinct.”
Cr Esber said while Parramatta would be sad to lose Rosehill Racecourse, which has been a part of the community for almost 140 years, the legacy would be homes for thousands of families close to transport, open space and the true heart of Greater Sydney.
“We’ll be leading the charge to make sure we don’t just replace the impact to our visitor economy but grow it.”
