The CommBank Young Matildas have been defeated by Mexico 2-0 in their second match of the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup Colombia 2024™.
Leah Blayney made two changes to the side who played in the opening match against Colombia. Midfielders Avaani Prakash and Shay Hollman came into the side, replacing Zara Kruger and Alicia Woods.
There were opportunities for both teams in the first half. For Mexico, Maribel Flores had a number of chances, including striking the crossbar with a long-range effort in the 20th minute.
Kahli Johnson won a penalty for Australia in the 36th minute after her cross on the edge of the area drew a handball from the Mexican defence. She was unable to convert from the spot and the teams went into half-time scoreless.
There were two changes made at half-time. Amber Luchtmeijer and Peta Trimis entered the pitch in place of Johnson and Tanaye Morris.
It would be Mexico who would open the scoring in the second half. A second phase ball in after a corner was reached by the outstretched boot of Fátima Servin. Her touch was enough to guide it into the goal via the inside of the post.
Alicia Woods was substituted on in the 60th minute in place of Indiana Dos Santos. The other substitutions in the second half were Ella Buchanan coming on for Jess Nash, and Lara Gooch for Jynaya Dos Santos as the team searched for an equaliser.
Mexico scored their second in stoppage time. A dangerous free kick found Natalia Ruiz, who was able to guide it into the path of Alejandra Lomelí. Lomelí tucked it home from close range.
