MidCoast Council has continued its commitment to the environment partnering with LGI Limited in a carbon cutting agreement.
Council has entered into a contract which involves LGI designing, installing, operating, maintaining and upgrading landfill gas capture systems at the Taree and Tuncurry waste management facilities.
The systems reduce harmful greenhouse gas emissions and decrease odour emissions.
MidCoast Council Mayor, Claire Pontin said the projects at the Tuncurry and Taree landfill sites will support the implementation of Council’s Climate Change Strategy.
“Council is planning to achieve net-zero emissions and 100 per cent renewable energy by 2040,” Cr Pontin said.
“Emissions from our landfill operations contribute approximately 70 per cent of Council’s total greenhouse gas emissions so investigating ways of decreasing gas emissions from our landfills is very important.
“We are pleased to enter into this agreement with LGI Limited, at no cost to Council or ratepayers, to add to our other initiatives to reduce harmful emissions.”
