From live open-mic zine-readings through to learning the basics of zine-making and meeting some of the biggest names in the industry, all this and more is outlined in the official Mildura Zine Fair program, which is now available.
Zines – short for magazines or fanzines – are small-circulation, self-published works of text and images, which at times have been hugely popular over many decades.
The Mildura Zine Fair will be held at Mildura Arts Centre (MAC) this Friday 29 July and Saturday 30 July, and will be the region’s second ever Zine Fair.
Councillor for Arts, Culture and Heritage Helen Healy encouraged people interested in embracing zine culture to pick up a free copy of the official program now from the Mildura Arts Centre, or by downloading a copy from the Mildura Zine Fair page on the MAC website.
“Aside from the huge collection of zines available to peruse throughout the two days at MAC, there are some great activities on offer,” Cr Healy said.
“There will be a workshop run by zinesters from Sticky Institute, an opportunity to learn more about zines in Zine Trail Talks , or simply a chance to relax at the VISTA Bar on opening night to network with other artists and zine-makers.
“This year’s program has something for anyone interested in learning about and embracing zine culture, so pick up a copy now and plan how you intend to immerse yourself in this creative and fun event.”
The Mildura Zine Fair is a collaboration between MAC and Sticky Institute, which is a zine hub in the Melbourne CBD, featuring a shop and resources devoted entirely to zines, stocking more than 12,000 titles since opening in 2001.
This week’s event has attracted both local and metropolitan-based artists, who will feature their works with 15 zine-maker stalls set up in the MAC foyer.
