Water Minister Glenn Butcher has visited Wivenhoe Dam to inspect geotechnical investigations which are underway onsite.
The specialist work is being undertaken by engineering company GHD.
These investigations will carefully assess the ground conditions and help to further understand the dam’s foundations. The work is supporting up to 10 jobs on site. These investigations will continue until late 2024, weather and site conditions permitting.
New Premier Steven Miles’ 2024-25 Queensland Budget included $11.46 million for planning work for the Wivenhoe Dam Improvement Program Project.
An Options Analysis for the dam’s upgrade project is underway and is exploring technical options supported by a number of studies. The geotechnical investigations will help inform this Options Analysis.
The project marks the most significant upgrade to Wivenhoe Dam since the installation of the auxiliary spillway in 2005.
As stated by Minister for Water, Glenn Butcher:
“Wivenhoe Dam continues to operate safely and this work is vital to ensuring the dam can provide water security and flood mitigation benefits for years to come.
“Of course, all our dams are safe, these upgrades are about making sure they all meet modern engineering standards.
“The planning and geotechnical works currently underway will support Seqwater to assess options for this important project. It’s good to see early investigative works underway which will help to determine the best way forward.
“The LNP are all over the shop when it comes to dams and water security. They have a shadow minister for dams, but all we’re hearing about is nuclear energy.”

“Seqwater is getting on with this important project, to make sure our dams meet modern engineering standards.
“It’s always good to see these important assessments and investigative works continuing to progress.
“We will provide the community with updates as the project progresses through the various stages, with the full upgrade due to be completed by 2035.”

Constructed in 1984, Wivenhoe Dam is South East Queensland’s largest water storage. The Dam supplies the greater Brisbane and Ipswich region and also provides flood mitigation benefits.
