Milestone reached for new Mental Health Centre at St Johns Park

Guy Barnett, Minister for Health, Mental Health and Wellbeing

The next step in delivering a new, community-based Mental Health Centre at St Johns Park in New Town has been reached, with a Development Application having been lodged with the City of Hobart.

Minister for Health, Mental Health and Wellbeing, Guy Barnett, was buoyed by this progress saying the St Johns Park Mental Health Centre will offer a range of services to improve the mental health of Tasmanians.

“Services at the site will include a 15-bed residential mental health unit, a Tasmanian Eating Disorder Service 12-bed residential facility, a day program area and consulting hub, as well as a Safe Haven, a Recovery College, and office and meeting spaces for Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services,” Minister Barnett said.

“The design has been developed in consultation with mental health services, consumers, carers, families and friends, and other key stakeholders in relation to considerations such as heritage and parking availability.

“As a Government we have ambitious plans for St Johns Park, including our commitment through our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future to establish an $82.56 million older persons mental health facility onsite.

“I look forward to continued progress on what is set to be an incredible gain for Tasmania’s health system.”

This project forms part of the broader St Johns Park Health and Wellbeing Precinct, for which a Masterplan is currently being developed.

Subject to achieving the necessary approvals, construction of the St Johns Park Mental Health Centre is expected to begin in late 2024.
