Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has announced a $1 million sponsorship of the Townsville Fire.

The funding, over three years, will be used to expand important programs aimed at young people aged between nine and 17.

“I’m thrilled that my Government will join forces with the Townsville Fire, the only Queensland team in the national women’s basketball league and one of the state’s leading female sporting teams,” the Premier said.

“The Fire are an inspiration to many North Queenslanders and together, we can bring young people into programs designed to address at-risk youth and provide mentoring and connect with healthy role models.”

The Premier made the announcement at Townsville’s sitting of State Parliament.

Minister for Communities and Minister for Disability Services and Seniors, Coralee O’Rourke said the funding came in addition to the government’s support for the city’s new stadium precinct hailed a game-changer for Townsville.

“We’re finalising our proposal aimed at engaging our youth and addressing social issues including school attendance and healthy behaviour.

“The Palaszczuk Government will work with Townsville Fire to finalise the details of this important partnership, which will be delivered across North Queensland and beyond.”

The Premier said the Government was committed to the promotion of sport and active recreation and the physical and mental health benefits it provided Queenslanders.

“That’s why my Government has committed $1.3 billion over 10 years for Queensland’s first Sport and Active Recreation Strategy: Activate! Queensland 2019–2029.

“It is a Strategy designed to get all Queenslanders more physically active, more often, and give more opportunities to Queenslanders to participate in the sport or active recreation of their choice.”
