Minister dodges accountability as Labor protects their own

Liberal Party Victoria

The Allan Labor Government is failing Victorian women by continuing to avoid accountability over harmful comments recently made by the Treasurer.

At this morning’s Public Accounts and Estimates Committee (PAEC) hearing, Minister for Women, Natalie Hutchins, avoided responding to questions relating to comments made by the Treasurer.

Last week Treasurer Tim Pallas stated in relation to flexible working arrangements that “certainly a lot of women see that it becomes liberating for them in terms of organising their home responsibilities.”

Shadow Minister for Women, Cindy McLeish, said: “The Minister’s failure to address these hurtful comments demonstrates Labor will continue to put their own interests ahead of the Victorian community.

“Rather than just providing a straightforward answer, the Minister had her Labor colleagues jump in to declare the question not valid and all manner of other things – you would think the Minister for Women really should be able to just answer the question.

“Labor should be embarrassed and ashamed. These are public hearings asking questions the public has a right to know the answers to, not a protection racket for their Labor mates.”
