The Minister for Environment and Water has delivered a statement on Australia’s international environmental leadership.
The statement highlighted work over the last 30 months including:
- hosting the world’s first Global Nature Positive Summit
- developing a market for nature repair
- supporting climate action
- sharing sustainable ocean management expertise
- progressing implementation of the Global Biodiversity Framework.
The statement also stressed that we must work together, both at home and overseas, to protect our environment.
Major domestic achievements over the last 12 months include:
- protecting more ocean than any other country
- working with Traditional Owners on new Indigenous Protected Areas
- implementing our new Strategy for Nature, which commits to no new extinctions.
Internationally, we have shown our commitment to environmental leadership by:
- playing a key role in negotiations for a new plastics treaty
- preparing to ratify and implement the high seas biodiversity treaty
- working with Pacific neighbours to reduce plastic waste and abandoned fishing gear, a major threat to marine life.
