The historic Mitchell Community Walk Against Violence was held along Sydney Street, Kilmore, on Friday 29 November.
Members from many different service providers, agencies and community groups united together for the 16 Days of Activism campaign – raising awareness against gender based violence.
The campaign provides an opportunity for Council to partner with agencies across the Shire to collectively make an impact and take a stance. As a municipality with significantly high family violence rates, Council want to showcase, as a collective, that it is not tolerated or accepted within our community.
This event aims to bring the community together to highlight a united front, taking a stand against violence, and to highlight that help and support is available for those in need throughout our municipality.
As a lone organisation, Council works hard to support victims of violence, however, we are not a service provider. So, in collaboration with North Central Review, Victoria Police, Nexus Primary Health, Women’s Health Goulburn North East, Goulburn Integrated Family Violence Network, Respect Victoria, Lower Hume Primary Care Partnership, Kilmore and District Hospital, and Seymour Health, the community will showcase the strengthened approach to a Mitchell free from violence.
The walk aims to both provide awareness of family violence as a significant issue and violation of human rights.
The united stance will continue across 16 Days of Activism which runs from Monday 25 November until Tuesday 10 December 2019.
