Mittagong Playhouse Restoration and Refurbishment Project Moves Forward

Wingecarribee Shire

The Mittagong Playhouse Restoration and Refurbishment project is taking a significant step forward with the submission of a Wingecarribee Shire Council grant application for $4.33 million to the NSW Government’s Growing Regions Program.

This grant, if successful, would help bridge the remaining funding gap Council requires to undertake the project, and allow for construction to begin on the restoration of the heritage-listed Mittagong Memorial Hall.

The funding would also be put towards the revitalisation of the connected School of Arts and Old Administration Building.

Council Administrator Viv May said the Grant assistance would greatly assist the restoration of much loved Community asset.

“We are excited to submit this grant application and continue moving this important project forward. The Mittagong Playhouse is a cornerstone of our community, and its restoration will provide a valuable cultural hub for residents and visitors alike,” he said.

“The restoration of the Playhouse will be a major boost for our economy and attract more visitors to the Southern Highlands,” he added.

Key points:

  • Council has submitted a full grant application to the Growing Regions Program.
  • The project will address structural integrity, accessibility, fire safety, and asbestos removal.
  • Modern audio-visual technology will be integrated to create a unique cultural experience.
  • The project aims to foster artistic expression, community engagement, and economic growth.
  • Council has already invested $592,000 in design development and development approvals.
  • The Hon. Stephen Jones MP and Judy Hannan MP have expressed continued support for the project.

Wingecarribee Shire Council now awaits the outcome of the Growing Regions Program grant application, expect around mid-late March this year. Following a potential successful outcome and execution of subsequent deeds, Council would anticipate starting a competitive tender process in the months following.

If successful, construction could begin as early as October 2024, subject to further funding and approvals.
