A vision for
the Saleyards Precinct that respects and incorporates the site’s history into
its future use, will be released to the public for consultation.
The Draft
Saleyards Precinct Plan proposes a mixed-use development with medium to high
density residential areas, retail, commercial uses, parkland and streetscapes
as the preferred uses within the precinct.
The purpose
of the precinct plan is to:
- develop a vision for the future use of the precinct
- prepare a concept layout plan that addresses land-use,
built form, access and movement, drainage and preferred public open space
network and - develop a suite of planning controls to implement the
vision for the precinct.
The historic
saleyards’ use and heritage assets of the site will be celebrated and
preserved, including the cattle yards and ramp, bluestone drain, central
thoroughfare and latrines shed through interpretation and adaptive reuse.
The precinct plan
study area consists of the former Geelong Saleyards, the former Target
Australia site, Sphinx Hotel and associated landholdings and the industrial
zone land to the north of these sites, but south of Victoria Street between
Weddell and Thompson Road. The site is well located in relation to Central
Geelong and the North Geelong Railway Station.
Innovation in
urban design, architecture, affordable and social housing, environmental
sustainability and technology are all preferred outcomes for the site.
The consultation
for this project will be designed to respond to current circumstances around
COVID-19. The consultation period will be for eight weeks to give the community
an adequate amount of time to engage in the process.
In lieu of
face to face consultation, the community will have the opportunity to engage
through a variety of online platforms. The precinct plan and opportunity to
engage will be available on our page.
Consultation is open until 9 August 2020.
A report will
be prepared later in the year for council to consider submissions and adopt the
final precinct plan, including options to implement the vision.
