80,000 sandbags filled as Moama braces for flooding not seen in 30 years
NSW SES is urging Moama residents to prepare for major flooding along the Murray River this week.
The Bureau of Meteorology has forecast flood levels may exceed the 1993 flood at Moama from later this week, after flows from the Murray River and Victorian rivers reach the community.
Assistant Commissioner Nicole Hogan said NSW SES members have been working with community members to assist property owners.
“With major flooding possible at Moama later this week, we are working with emergency services and the community to prepare,” Assistant Commissioner Hogan said.
“We have seen a large number of spontaneous volunteers from the community come together to help with handing out 45,000 sandbags over the weekend, and an additional 80,000 sandbags sent yesterday.
With another low pressure system forecast for the state from today (Wednesday), NSW SES is working with the Bureau of Meteorology to plan for potential river rises.
“We are monitoring the situation, but please prepare your property now and be ready to leave if instructed to do so by emergency services,” Assistant Commissioner Hogan said.
“There are many roads closed across the state due to inundation, so we urge people to never enter floodwater. If it’s flooded, forget it.”
