Australia’s domestic and international mail screening, inspection and intervention arrangements have received a major update today following the passage of a new Bill in Parliament.
The Albanese Government’s Australian Postal Corporation and Other Legislation Amendment Bill 2024 – introduced in Parliament in March 2024 – will improve security screening, and clarify and improve existing regulatory arrangements so they continue to operate effectively in modern Australia.
Today’s postal network is fundamental to facilitating domestic and international commerce and trade, as well as the importation and exportation of goods to and from Australia, and is being driven by a growing eCommerce sector. The Bill recognises this and will ensure Australia’s mail screening system remains fit-for-purpose.
The Bill has also future-proofed the system against emerging risks, allowing Australia Post and border agencies to adapt their practices as required, and help support people and businesses across Australia.
When fully implemented, Australia Post and border agencies can more efficiently share relevant information with other agencies and authorities to assist in the performance of their functions and duties during investigative and regulatory activities.
The measures in the Bill were developed in consultation with relevant stakeholders over an extended period, to ensure the measures are operationally fit-for-purpose regardless of further advancements in technology.
The Government will now work with Australia Post and border agencies to implement the Bill.

“Australia’s mail gateways, where domestic and international mail is screened and processed, are being placed under increasing pressure due to rising volumes and threats to Australia’s biosecurity and national security, and the passing of this Bill will help meet those demands.”
