Mon Repos to cater for more on tour come 2022

The Mon Repos Turtle Centre will cater for more participants on its nightly turtle tours from January 2022.

“In more great news for the Bundaberg tourism industry, rangers at the new Mon Repos Turtle Centre are getting ready to welcome extra visitors on evening turtle tours in the New Year, because of the easing of Covid 19 restrictions on gatherings,” Mon Repos Ranger in Charge Nikki Murnane said today.

“While eager visitors who had their name on the wait list have already filled all of the available spots on turtle tours up until 23 January 2022, extra spots are now available on tours from 23 January right through to the end of the turtle nesting season in March.”

One of the Bundaberg region’s key tourist attractions, the turtle tours provide a special experience for visitors, who can see endangered loggerhead and flatback turtles nesting and hatching on the beach and foredune, under the expert guidance of trained rangers and guides.

Bookings are essential as there are limited tickets.

Visitors who want to take up this opportunity can and through Bundaberg Visitor Information Centre on 1300 722 099.

Proof of double COVID-19 vaccination is required for entry to the Mon Repos Turtle Centre and for the nightly turtle tours.

Mon Repos, on the coast east of Bundaberg, supports the largest concentration of nesting marine turtles on the eastern Australian mainland.

It has the most significant loggerhead turtle nesting population in the South Pacific region, and the success of nesting and hatching turtles at Mon Repos is critical for the survival of the endangered loggerhead turtle.

Last year more than 350 turtles nested at Mon Repos and some 12,000 people joined in the Mon Repos night turtle tours.

So far this season, more than 3500 nightly visitors have enjoyed watching and waiting for turtles to come up the beach and they have seen 120 loggerheads, seven flatbacks and three green turtles lay.

The Mon Repos Turtle Centre is dedicated to marine turtle research, protection and education.
