The future of environmental science looks brighter than ever as a group of enthusiastic students from Monaro High School embarked on an educational journey through Snowy Monaro Regional Council’s state-of-the-art Cooma wastewater treatment plant – The Glen – on Thursday 27 July 2023.

After a two-year hiatus, owing to the challenges posed by the pandemic, the students finally got a chance to witness the science and engineering marvels behind turning toilet water into fresh water.

Guided by the knowledgeable water and wastewater team from Council, the students were treated to an engaging and comprehensive tour that unveiled the intricate process involved in sewage treatment.

From the initial flush to meticulous microscope analysis and on to eventual discharge, the students were taken through the marriage of science, technology, and human ingenuity at work in a modern wastewater treatment plant.

“Such educational experiences are crucial in reminding us all of the incredible advancements and innovations present even in the most mundane aspects of our daily lives,” said Councillor Narelle Davis, Mayor of Snowy Monaro Regional Council.

“Our wastewater treatment processes, with their expansive lagoons brimming with beneficial bacteria and high-tech ultraviolet sterilisers, showcase Council’s commitment to utilising leading technology to benefit our community.”

The Mayor expressed pride in the collaborative effort between Council and the region’s educators. “We are deeply committed to supporting our young minds and students. I wholeheartedly encourage schools, teachers, and other educators to connect with us, so together, we can inform and inspire the next generation of STEM leaders.”

The visit to The Glen builds on an impressive environmental science curriculum devised and delivered by Monaro High’s dedicated and innovative science teacher, Kasey Marks.

These students – witnessing the blend of innovation and sustainability in action at The Glen – will be our next generation of scientists, engineers, and environmentalists. Council is privileged to play a small role in educating our region’s young people to take up the mantle of responsible custodianship of our planet.
