Monash excellence reinforced in latest global subject rankings

Monash University

Monash University has ranked in the top 50 in the world across a broad range of subjects – from philosophy, medicine and chemistry to education, economics and law – in the 2023 QS World University Rankings by Subject.

Fifteen Monash subjects placed in the global top 50 with six subjects ranking number one in Australia, including:

  • Pharmacy and Pharmacology;
  • Engineering – Chemical;
  • Materials Science;
  • Economics and Econometrics;
  • Performing Arts (equal first); and
  • Statistics and Operational Research (equal first).

Monash’s position as a world-leading higher education institution was reflected in having top-50 rated subjects within each of QS’s five broad subject areas – Art and Humanities, Engineering and Technology, Life Sciences and Medicine, Natural Sciences, Social Sciences, and Business.

These rankings are based on both academic and employer reputation, as well as research and impact, and highlight the industry success of our students. The Federal Government’s ComparED resource – the public-facing repository of data on the Australian higher education sector – shows that Monash produces the most job-ready graduates in Victoria, with 74.3 per cent in full-time employment.

Monash graduates are employed at an above-average rate across disciplines including nursing, communications, science and mathematics, computing and information systems, and creative arts.

Monash University has achieved an enviable reputation for research and teaching excellence, and is ranked in the in the 2022-23 US News and World Report Best Global Universities Rankings (=37th) and the 2023 Times Higher Education World University Rankings (44th).

The QS World University Rankings by Subject assess the performance of almost 1,500 universities worldwide. The rankings are compiled from an analysis of more than 16.4 million unique papers, 117.8 million citations and global surveys by employers and academics.

Overall, Monash ranked in the top 100 for 40 subjects out of 46 assessed by QS.
