More Belconnen suburbs to receive an additional green waste collection following storm

A further five Belconnen suburbs impacted by the storm on Monday will receive an additional green waste bin collection. This will occur on Saturday 15 January 2022.

“With the Belconnen community continuing to work hard through clean-up efforts, the ACT Government and its collection contractor will make things a little easier and provide residents in Flynn, Fraser, Higgins, Melba and Page with an additional green waste collection,” Deputy Director-General, Transport Canberra and City Services, Ben McHugh said.

“Residents in those suburbs will receive the extra green waste collection on Saturday 15 January 2022,” Mr McHugh said.

This is in addition to the already nine suburbs that will receive an additional green waste bin collection tomorrow, Saturday 8 January 2022. Those suburbs include Charnwood, Dunlop, Florey, Hawker, Holt, Latham, Macgregor, Scullin and Weetangera.

Green waste that can be put in your green waste bin for collection includes garden pruning, leaves, grass clippings, weeds and small branches no longer than 45cm and a diameter of 10cm.

Mr McHugh also reminded Belconnen residents that the ACT Government is providing free food waste disposal to those who have experienced power outages and spoiled food following the storm.

“From today, Belconnen residents who have been impacted are welcome to take household quantities of spoiled food, at no charge, to the transfer stations at Mitchell and Mugga Lane Resource Management Centres,” Mr McHugh said.

“Until Saturday 15 January 2022, Belconnen residents can dispose of food waste at the Mitchell and Mugga Lane transfer stations, up to a medium sized load (a sedan with trailer, a utility or a wagon). It is important to note this fee waiver applies to spoilt food waste as a result of the power outages, not for the disposal of other items.

“This is in addition to the skip bin for food waste that has been arranged at the Community Information Hub at the Molonglo ACT Rural Fire Service Facility, 27 Drake Brockman Drive, Higgins.”
