More bus drivers wanted ahead of exciting time for Canberra’s public transport

Transport Canberra is looking for more permanent part-time bus drivers as it prepares for an exciting period of growth that includes the transition to MyWay+, Canberra’s next generation ticketing system.

Executive Branch Manager of Transport Canberra Bus Operations Ian McGlinn said the recruitment round comes at a pivotal time with not only MyWay+ on the way, but major transport infrastructure construction taking place and the arrival of more electric buses.

“New drivers will be part of an exciting period for Transport Canberra as we change the way we travel with MyWay+, our next generation ticketing system, which will provide simple ways to pay, more real-time information and better journey planning,” Mr McGlinn said.

“Bus drivers will be at the forefront of new MyWay+ technology embedded in buses which will help drivers with their navigation and provide more convenient payment options and display of passenger information.

“As we continue to expand our zero-emissions fleet to support a more sustainable future, we’re also upgrading and adding to our transport infrastructure with the construction of a new transport interchange and bus depot at Woden.

“These facilities will help to change the face of the Woden region and provide better services to the community, improved facilities for drivers, and better capacity to charge and accommodate more battery electric buses.”

The permanent part-time bus driver application period opens today and will run until Sunday 18 August 2024.

Two information sessions will be held where people can learn about the recruitment and training process, hear from current staff about what it’s like to work at Transport Canberra and ask questions.

  • Tuesday 23 July 2024 at 480 Northbourne Avenue in Dickson, starting from 1:00 pm onwards.
  • Tuesday 23 July 2024 at Ainslie Football Club, starting from 7:00 pm onwards.

In addition to information sessions, a ‘come and try day’ is also scheduled on Saturday 27 July at the Sutton Road Training Centre located at 441 Sutton Road, Majura.

“This is the perfect opportunity for people interested in becoming a driver to see what it’s like behind the wheel of an actual bus. Transport Canberra staff will be onsite to guide the process and answer any questions,” Mr McGlinn said.

‘Come and try day’ sessions are free and will be available between 8:30 am and 4:30 pm. Registration is essential and the drive will count towards the application process.
