More Housing For Victorian Women At Risk

VIC Premier

The Allan Labor Government is ensuring more Victorian women at risk of homelessness have a safe and secure place to call home.

Minister for Housing Harriet Shing today visited St Albans to officially open the new $23.6 million social housing complex – which will provide stable and long-term housing for women most in need.

Once the site of a single 3-bedroom home, the redeveloped site now features 53 one-, two- and three-bedroom homes for up to 100 people, including First Nations women and women fleeing family violence.

The new homes are designed to meet the Liveable Housing Design Guidelines and each achieve a minimum seven-star energy rating – helping residents reduce power consumption and save on bills.

The homes will be owned and managed by Women’s Housing Limited, a community housing agency specialising in providing housing and services to vulnerable women.

The Labor Government’s partnership with the community housing sector is an intrinsic relationship which supports the delivery of social housing for Victorians who need it most.

Creating more than 210 jobs during construction – the homes are conveniently located near social services such as schools, hospitals and public transport.

As part of Labor’s landmark $5.3 billion Big Housing Build, we’re delivering 12,000 new social and affordable homes – with more than 3,000 new homes already completed, and a further 4,600 homes underway.

Across Brimbank we’re delivering 108 new homes – ensuring more Victorians get the safer, secure and stable home they need.

As stated by Minister for Housing Harriet Shing

“We’re continuing our work to provide housing, care and services to people most in need, including First Nations women and survivors of family violence.”

As stated by Member for St Albans Natalie Suleyman

“There’s nothing more important than making sure everyone has a home, so it’s wonderful to be able to deliver housing for women who need it most, right here in St Albans.”
