The Andrews Labor Government is delivering additional venues after thousands of football fans gathered at Fed Square in the early hours of Thursday morning to watch the Socceroos history-making win over Denmark – a moment that put Melbourne on the global football stage.
With thousands more now expected to gather for Sunday’s game, we’re making sure as many people as possible can enjoy the action and encourage all fans, in all places, to celebrate in a safe and respectful way.
The venues will work closely with Victoria Police and others to ensure the viewing experience safe and enjoyable.
Victoria’s landmark buildings will be lit up in green and gold from 8pm on Saturday until dawn Sunday, with the Round of 16 match played at 6.00am (Melbourne time) Sunday 4 December.
As stated by Premier Daniel Andrews
“This Sunday will see thousands of football fans again descend on Melbourne’s CBD, so we’re making more live sites available for football fans to watch the Socceroos’ historic World Cup match against Argentina.“
“This is Australia’s best-ever World Cup performance, and we’re making sure as many people as possible can enjoy the action and cheer on our side as it takes the field in Qatar.”
“I encourage footballs fans to come down, soak the atmosphere and cheer on the Socceroos in a safe and respectful manner at the live sites.”
