Commuters using Murarrie Station now have access to an extra 132 park n ride car spaces.
Member for Bulimba Di Farmer said the $5.8 million upgrade had delivered extra capacity to reduce the parking pressures at the station.
“Our numbers show more people are using Murarrie Station, so this upgrade will be welcomed by our community and the commuters who travel here to catch the train,” Ms Farmer said.
“Between last July and April this year, almost 143,000 passengers caught the train at Murarrie, which is up almost six per cent at the station, compared to the same period in the previous year.
“Now with an additional 132 parking bays, commuters have access to more parking, as well as benefitting from improved lighting and more security cameras to improve customer safety.
“About 18 jobs were supported by this project and I thank the community for their patience while we got the job done.”
Ms Farmer said Cannon Hill Station was one of the next southside train stations in line for an upgrade under the Palaszczuk Government’s park n ride upgrade program.
“That project involves upgrades to the overpass and security improvements, as well adding to the station’s 168 existing parking spaces,” he said.
“That upgrade will focus on improving accessibility station, including lift access, raised platforms, hearing loops and other features for people with a disability.
“Tenders for construction have been called to build 80 more spaces at the park n ride there and we’re on track to award the contract for those works next month,” Ms Farmer said.
Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said the Murarrie Station upgrade was delivered in addition to the Palaszczuk Government’s $114 million election commitment to expand capacity at nine other SEQ park ‘n’ rides, providing more than 2300 new car parks over the next five years.
“We are working hard to invest in public transport to help ease congestion in south east Queensland and this investment will make it even easier for customers to access public transport,” Mr Bailey said.
“More Queenslanders are taking public transport, with a record 182 million trips across the south east in 2017/18 and we’re on track to break that record again.
“That’s why the Palaszczuk Government is building the $5.4 billion Cross River Rail project and investing in dedicated lanes for buses on key arterial roads in Brisbane.
“Park n rides built in the right locations allow customers to connect with high-frequency public transport where walking, bike riding and connecting public transport options are limited.”
