More Tasmanians better off with advanced meters

Nick Duigan, Minister for Energy and Renewables

The transfer of Tasmanians households and businesses to Advanced (smart) meters has reached a new milestone.

Seventy per cent of customers are now on an advanced meter which is a significant milestone, and is in line with the Rockliff Liberal Government’s commitment that every Tasmanian home and business will have an advanced meter by the end of 2026. This is well ahead of the national target of 2030.

Advanced meters are the next generation of electricity meters and offer many more benefits to customers than older style basic meters, including remote reads to prevent estimated bills.

They can also be leveraged to develop new modern products – like the aurora+ app – that empower customers to help keep energy costs down.

Minister for Energy and Renewables, Nick Duigan, said one in three Tasmanian homes (80,000 Tasmanians) are now using aurora+, which gives customers access to energy usage information at their fingertips.

“This information is available to anyone with an Advanced meter installed on an eligible tariff and importantly, there is no fee to use it,” Minister Duigan said.

“Aurora+ is an amazing tool that enables customers to better understand and control their energy costs – that’s why we would like as many Tasmanians to benefit from it as possible.

“Being able to see how and when you’re using energy is powerful as it reinforces the necessary changes inside the home needed to bring down your energy usage and we’re excited that more than 80,000 are now taking advantage of aurora+.

“The rollout of advanced meters, and the uptake of aurora+ has been very pleasing.

“Our Government is delivering on its commitment for Tasmanians to have the lowest power prices, and with products like aurora+, Tasmanians can save even more on their energy bills.”

The Rockliff Liberal Government is doing what matters to Tasmanians by keeping power prices at the lowest in Australia to help address the cost of living.
