State Highway Patrol officers have impounded a car after the driver was caught more than double the speed limit in Albert Park overnight.
Officers first spotted the Toyota 86, travelling in convoy with other modified vehicles, along Beaconsfield Parade about 10pm.
The driver accelerated heavily and was detected travelling 125km/h in the 60km/h while also weaving through three north bound lanes.
After police intercepted the vehicle, officers were shocked to find that three of the four wheels were missing wheel nuts.
The car was impounded for 30 days at a cost of $896.
It is expected the 26-year-old Carlton man will be charged on summons in relation to driving at a speed dangerous, manner dangerous and driving a vehicle that does not meet the standards of registration.
The intercept forms part of Operation Hammerhead, a State Highway Patrol initiative, targeting intentional high risk driving behaviours and the main causes of fatalities and serious injuries including excessive speed, driver distraction, fatigue, impaired driving and restraint non-compliance.
The operation will run until Sunday.
