Morley drain to be transformed into a new wetland

  • McGowan Government committed to delivering more liveable environments
  • State and local governments working together to create sustainable, productive, resilient and liveable communities
  • In three years, the Drainage for Liveability Program has helped transform eight functional drains into living streams
  • Morley will soon be home to a new vibrant, liveable space with the McGowan Government, through the Water Corporation, and the City of Bayswater working together to transform a drainage area into a living stream and wetland.

Located at Peters Place Reserve, the new wetland will continue to serve as flood prevention, while also providing a greener community space with significant environmental benefits.

The living stream and wetland will clean stormwater as it flows through the landscape, positively impacting on water quality, and creating a healthier water system.

Extensive tree planting will also be carried out and lower fencing will allow the community to have greater engagement with the wetland.

Forming part of the Water Corporation’s Light Street Branch Drain, this project will see the drain’s storage capacity increased with a new low-level drain and compensation basin created.

The State Government, through the Water Corporation, will contribute $270,000 towards the project with City of Bayswater adding a further $50,000 and managing the work and construction.

Peters Place follows other successful projects delivered in partnership with City of Bayswater at Russell Street Park and Jakobsons Way, both in Morley.

These projects are now linked to improve water quality within the Bayswater Brook catchment – the fifth highest contributor of nutrients into the Swan River.

The Peters Place project forms part of the Drainage for Liveability Program. The program is run in partnership with the Water Corporation and the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation to enhance the value of storm water drains and basins to communities across the State.

As stated by Water Minister Dave Kelly:

“One of this Government’s priorities is creating clean, green liveable environments for the people of Western Australia.

“Living streams play an important role in cleaning up stormwater as it moves through the city landscape, providing new ways of improving our public open spaces.

“The Peters Place Drainage for Liveability Project is a great example of how drains can be both functional, and also create more liveable, greener areas for the community to access and enjoy.”

As stated by Mount Lawley MLA Simon Millman:

“It is great to see different levels of government working together to transform these areas into greener and environmentally friendly spaces.

“We’re all rapt to be able to deliver such positive change for the Peters Place neighbourhood.”
