The Morrison Government has today announced $6 million to investigate rapid transport solutions between Caulfield and Rowville via the Monash Precinct.
Minister for Communications, Urban Infrastructure, Cities and the Arts, the Hon Paul Fletcher MP, said the Caulfield-Rowville Link Business Case would consider alternative transport options including improvements to the existing bus network, bus rapid transit, light rail, and trackless tram, to service Melbourne’s growing south-east.
“The business case will examine transport solutions, including an option for a Trackless Rapid Transit proposal, in the corridor extending from Caulfield station in Melbourne’s south east to the suburb of Rowville via the Monash precinct,” Minister Fletcher said.
“The Morrison Government is committed to funding the delivery of transport projects that create jobs, reduce travel times for commuters and freight, and improve congestion on local roads.”
Federal Member for Chisholm, Gladys Liu MP, said the Australian Government has committed a total of over $3 billion toward infrastructure projects across Victoria’s Eastern and South Eastern Metropolitan region.
“Our critical investments in this region’s future includes $1.75 billion for the North East Link and $683.8 million for the Monash Freeway upgrade,” Ms Liu said.
“Improved transport links to Chadstone Shopping Centre and the Monash precinct and through to Rowville would be an investment in improved access to jobs, health services and affordable housing.”
Federal Member for Higgins, Dr Katie Allen MP, said the business case will evaluate and present options for improved public transport, better connections between people and jobs, a more reliable transport network and costings.
“This is an important step in planning south-east Melbourne’s integrated transport future, with the suburbs surrounding the Monash precinct having grown significantly in the past 40 years,” Dr Allen said.
“This is ultimately about removing growth constraints for the education precinct around Monash University’s Clayton Campus, which is a key employment hub, as well as the broader growth region through to Rowville.”
The business case will consider improvements to the existing bus network, bus rapid transit and light rail.
The funding for the Business Case has been committed on a 50:50 basis in partnership with the Victorian Government.
