The Mort Street upgrade project has been completed, creating Toowoomba’s main connection to the Toowoomba Second Range Crossing (TSRC).
Toowoomba Regional Council Mayor Paul Antonio said the upgrade was designed to improve traffic flow to and from the TSRC.
“This high-profile project has provided a new northern entrance into the city with significant landscaping to beautify the route including a tree-lined boulevard, Mayor Antonio said.
“As part of the $31 million project, Mort Street has been upgraded from the intersection of Mort / West / Jellicoe streets to north of Hogg Street where the road connects to the TSRC.
“The upgrade is one of the largest and most complex construction projects undertaken by Council and largely delivered by Council’s own workforce.”
Toowoomba Regional Council Deputy Mayor and Chair of the Infrastructure Committee Cr Carol Taylor said the upgrade was constructed in three stages.
“The first stage involved reconstruction of the Fiveways intersection and significant stormwater works including tunnel boring under Mort Street and the adjacent railway line,” Cr Taylor said.
“Stage two works involved upgrading the Mort Street / North Street intersection, installation of new traffic signals, widening the Thackeray Street intersection, major stormwater and live sewer installations, construction of retaining walls and footpaths.”
The third stage included upgrading the Mort Street / Griffiths Street / Hogg Street intersection, construction of a new road alignment north of Hogg Street to connect with the TSRC, installation of new stormwater drainage including tunnel boring under the railway line and water main replacement along Mort and Hogg streets.
Cr Taylor said the project also included significant service relocation works including relocating the high-pressure gas main and the undergrounding of the overhead power.
“The upgrading of Mort Street will greatly improve safety for all road users, including a shared path provided for the length of the project to encourage pedestrian/active transport in the area,” she said.
“Council thanks businesses, residents and motorists for their patience and co-operation during the upgrade works.”
The Mort Street Upgrade Project is predominantly funded by Toowoomba Regional Council with support from both the Australian and Queensland Governments.
