Motorists urged to slow down at Council roadworks after spike in near misses

Council has urged motorists to slow down through road works after recording a more-than 40 per cent increase in near-miss incidents.

There’s been 16 near-miss incidents recorded between vehicles and Council team members so far this year, compared to nine for all of 2022.

Mayor Jenny Hill said it’s a 43 per cent increase in recorded incidents with still more than a quarter of the year left.

“Council is busy repairing and upgrading sections of our more than 1,850km road network before the start of the wet season,” Cr Hill said.

“There’s been too many incidents of our team members nearly getting struck by a vehicle while on site because motorists aren’t paying attention, or they’re speeding or just refusing to obey the rules.

“We understand these works can be an inconvenience but they’re necessary as we continue to improve our road and transport network.

“Council is ramping up with more works over the coming months to try and get as much done before the wet weather sets in and we are encouraging people to slow down, pay attention and obey signage.”
