Mould Forces Gymnasium Closure

Council has been forced to close the Gymnastics and Kindergym Club due to mould forming after recent heavy weather.

Testing revealed that several areas of the facility’s ceiling contained common forms of mould that could elevate the risk of asthma or allergies on contact.

Council’s General Manager, Jay Nankivell, said Council was taking an extremely cautious approach to the incident.

“We inspected our major facilities after recent rain events and unfortunately mould was discovered in the gymnasium,” he said.

“There is no issue with airborne spores, it’s simply surface mould on the ceiling of the building.

“We apologise to the gymnastics club for taking such drastic action, but we feel it’s better to be safe than sorry with mould given recent hot and humid weather.”

Council will now work with contractors to prepare a schedule for cleaning and remediation.

Council will also work with the gymnastics club to find alternative arrangements for their regular programs and special events, and to undertake any cleaning and transport of equipment as required.
