Multicultural Photographers Showcased In Exhibition

VIC Premier

A free photography exhibition that showcases the diverse experiences of multicultural communities is now underway in Melbourne.

The Capturing Culture: Multicultural Victoria in Focus exhibition includes 24 unique photographs that reflect the personal stories of multicultural artists and capture moments at the heart of every community.

The photographs were shortlisted from 120 submissions in a competition hosted by the Victorian Multicultural Commission, in partnership with the Immigration Museum and sponsored by Commonwealth Bank, Jobs Victoria and Segmento.

Competition winners were announced at the exhibition launch at the Immigration Museum on Thursday – and were awarded prizes to support their creative endeavors. Their photographs represent the best of entries submitted in four categories; Days of Significance and Cultural Celebration, Faces, Daily Life and Resilience.

Winners included Clement Chua, who captured Federation Square’s Buddha Festival, Deshani Berhardt, who used light and shadow to illustrate the duality of pandemic experiences, Ammar None, who captured a moment of companionship in daily life and Nanchok Santino Chol, whose photograph depicts resilience through the proud poses of South Sudanese women.

A Minister’s Choice Award was also presented to Alejandra Olavarria for their artwork ‘The Love You Give’, which reflects the artist’s insight that ‘the soul of resilience multiplies in the women holding communities together’.

The Capturing Culture: Multicultural Victoria in Focus exhibition is being held at the Immigration Museum in Melbourne until 26 June 2022.
