Multimillion dollar facilities and major redevelopment to enhance STEM education

  • Cutting-edge $18.7 million STEM centre officially opened at Carine Senior High School
  • Facilities include 300 seat lecture theatre and general classrooms
  • Recently announced $32 million redevelopment part of WA Recovery Package
  • Additional works will provide new facilities to cater for increasing student enrolments
  • Education and Training Minister Sue Ellery has toured and officially opened the state-of-the-art STEM centre at Carine Senior High School today.

The $18.7 million building program – completed in 2019 – also included a brand new 300 seat lecture theatre, general classroom block, food studio and café. The school’s existing science laboratories, food studios and staff and student change rooms were also refurbished.

Carine Senior High School has a highly-successful science program with a significant number of students participating in selective science, technology, engineering and mathematics courses across the school.

The extensive new facilities will enhance the school’s new Gifted and Talented program, which started with a group of Year 7 students this year.

The school is also set to receive a $32 million major redevelopment as part of the WA Recovery Package to cater for increasing enrolments.

This project is currently in the planning phase but will include new general classrooms, and additional facilities for STEM, food technology, visual arts and media. This project is expected to commence in late 2021.

The unprecedented Major School Upgrade package – totalling $492.2 million – includes $319.2 million of new funding for upgrades and refurbishments at 63 public schools around the State, stimulating economic growth and supporting around 1,850 jobs.

As stated by Education and Training Minister Sue Ellery:

“It’s fantastic to see the increasing popularity of the STEM subjects among the students at Carine Senior High School.

“The state-of-the-art centre is providing students with outstanding learning opportunities preparing them to move seamlessly into further studies and successful careers.

“A major redevelopment will allow the school to continue with their strong focus on STEM and accommodate additional students as they grow the new Gifted and Talented program.”
