Western District police have charged nine people with drink driving and six people with driving whilst disqualified this long weekend.
Inspector Adam Spencer said police were active across the north-west, conducting proactive road safety operations and were disappointed with the results.
“Drink drivers were caught all over the Western District – Devonport, Burnie, Gowrie Park and Wynyard,” he said.
“One of the people caught has now been charged with drink driving three times since Wednesday, and another was caught for the third time this year.”
“Several were disqualified from driving or driving an unregistered vehicle, and two others were speeding at the time they were caught.”
“These people are putting other road users at risk, and it’s just not good enough.”
Inspector Spencer said that Western District’s Taskforce Scelus was also operating over the weekend.
“A 31-year-old north-west woman was arrested and charged with evading police, negligent driving and motor vehicle stealing,” he said.
“Task Force Scelus targets recidivist crime and road safety offenders in the Western District.”
“The woman was detected through committed police work and now also stands charged with alleged aggravated burglaries, burglaries, stealing and other criminal matters around the north-west.”
Inspector Spencer did praise the driver behaviour of those in popular tourist spots areas as Arthur River, Temma and Macquarie Heads.
“Our police were out and about in these communities – on the tracks and beaches, and they were very pleased by driver behaviour in these areas,” he said.
“We appreciate that most of the Tasmanian community do the right thing on our roads.”
“The problem is the minority doing the opposite, puts us all at risk.”
“You can expect that police will be on the road day and night and will hold those people to account for their actions.”
