³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾ capital light rail Stage 2A consultation open

Dept of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Communications

Public consultation on the Works Approval of Light Rail Stage 2A is now open.

The six-week consultation period will provide opportunities for the public to engage with both the ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾ Capital Authority (NCA) and ACT Government on details of the proposal.

The Works Approval is the first stage of Australian Government approvals required – with Stage 2A to be located in ‘Designated Areas’ administered by the NCA.

Consultation on the Works Approval is part of the NCA’s role in ensuring the territory is planned and developed in a manner that is not inconsistent with the ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾ Capital Plan.

Submissions can influence the final design on the following topics:

· liveability, including excellence in urban design, landscape and architecture, and the quality of materials and finishes used.

· comments of whether the proposal respects the 1918 Griffin Plan as the primary organising framework of the city’s form, landscape, and symbolism.

· views on whether environmental values are maintained or enhanced and impacts on the sustainability of urban areas.

· planning for infrastructure and employment.

· accessible movement systems for a diversity of pedestrian, cycle, public and private transport modes.

Quotes attributable to Minister for Regional Development, Local Government and Territories, and Member for Eden-Monaro, the Hon Kristy McBain MP:

“This is one of the biggest infrastructure transformations ever seen in the national capital’s history, which is why it’s so important that Canberrans have the opportunity to shape this iconic project.

“The Griffin Plan always envisioned the development of a tram line, because in 1918 they knew that a modern city would require a modern transport network.

“I encourage all Canberrans to make a formal submission or to attend one of the community information sessions over the coming weeks through to May.”
