³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾ Farmers Federation hosts next generation of agricultural leaders

The ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾ Farmers’ Federation with support from Telstra has guided the next crop of agricultural leaders through an immersive three-day “bootcamp” for leadership.

The six participants from across the nation visited the nation’s capital for a leadership forum where they learnt about the ins and outs of Parliament, including meeting the Minister for Regional Development Kristy McBain, Assistant Minister Andrew Leigh, and Agriculture Minister Murray Watt, also attending his address at the ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾ Press Club.

They also heard from NFF leadership, met with key figures from the public service and the private sector, visited the Press Gallery and participated in media training.

NFF President Fiona Simson said it was important the NFF played a role in supporting and guiding future leaders, and after meeting with the group this week, she believes the future of agriculture is in good hands.

“We want the next generation of changemakers to be equipped with the skills and confidence to understand what makes effective advocacy, so our industry is never left behind.

“Agriculture has a goal to be the next $100 billion industry by 2030 and the only way we are going to get there is with new ideas, new perspectives and this flagship program helps us deliver on that.

“By nurturing and encouraging people who are already involved and passionate about agriculture, we are sowing the seeds for a bumper harvest.”

Participant Kate McLachlan from South Australia said the program provided a great insight into the work of the NFF and how to best represent farmers in Australia.

“An afternoon is Parliament House was a great experience. Seeing the ins and outs of Parliament, the press gallery and ministerial offices has really helped me understand the nature of being an advocate for agriculture,” she said.

The annual ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾ Agricultural Leadership Program comprises four components: a Leadership Forum providing exposure to policy, advocacy, parliamentary process and government; a Policy Project giving participants practical experience developing and advocating policy; a mentoring program; and an inspiring speakers webinar series.
