A new symphony composed while travelling to Antarctica on the RSV Aurora Australis is to be broadcast on national radio.
Acclaimed composer/conductor Gordon Hamilton created the ‘Far South’ symphony while a round-trip expeditioner with the Australian Antarctic Program in 2018.
The symphony is a musical legacy of the icebreaker Aurora Australis, currently undertaking its final resupply voyage after three decades of service for the Australian Antarctic Division.
The world premiere of ‘Far South’ was performed by the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra at Hamer Hall in February 2020.
The symphony will be broadcast by Australia’s ABC Classic at 1pm on Sunday 22 March. The schedule can be viewed, and the radio broadcast accessed, at https://www.abc.net.au/classic/live-music/concert-schedule/
