Australians are being urged to ‘take the pledge’ during ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾ Road Safety Week to “Drive So Others Survive”.
³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾ Road Safety week – an annual initiative from Government organisations highlighting the impact of road trauma and ways to reduce it – is being held this year from15-22 May.
Each year, around 1,200 people are killed and another 44,000 are seriously injured on national roads.
Traffic injury is the biggest killer of Australian children under the age of 15 and the second-biggest killer of al Australians aged between 15-25.
These numbers are growing every year but are preventable if we choose to “Drive So Others Survive”.
In Leeton Shire alone there were 121 crashes with 134 casualties and four fatalities from 2017-2020.
Speed was involved in 19.8% of crashes, fatigue involved in 19% of cases and alcohol involved in 12.1% of cases.
As part of ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾ Road Safety week, Council is hosting three events to educate road users on the following topics:
- Mobility Scooters and Older Driving
- Graduated Licensing Workshop (GLS) for supervisors of Learner Drivers
- Child Restraints
The Mobility Scooters and Older Driver Workshop will be held on 17 May at the Leeton Library at 10am. Bookings are essential and drivers and mobility scooter users will hear a presentation regarding road safety, road rules and safe scooter use.
The Graduated Licensing Workshop will be held on the 18 May at 6pm at the Leeton Library and is suitable for supervisors of learner drivers offering practical advice on how to provide the most effective driving practice for learner drivers.
The Child Restraint checking day will be held on the 21 May at the Leeton Market Plaza 9am to 12noon. Parents and carers of young children are invited to come along to find out more about the child restraint laws and to have their child restraints checked for correct installation by an accredited fitter, Lanhams of Leeton, free of charge.
