Navigating Through Cancer is a series of eight weekly support and awareness presentations delivered through the WA Telehealth system straight to your own electronic device or computer.
The program will be hosted by expert guest speakers on topics relevant to those impacted by cancer living in rural and remote Western Australia. These sessions offer the opportunity for people impacted by cancer to learn relevant evidence-based information and to ask questions on the day.
You may want to join every session or choose sessions relevant to your particular situation.
Sessions will explore:
Session 1 – Cancer, It’s Treatments and You
This session our guest speaker will talk about the currently available treatments for cancer and the common side effects with practical ideas to help. Our guest speaker will also talk about pain management, your Health Care team and your rights as a cancer patient.

Session 2 – Emotions, Communication and Cancer
This session will touch on the emotions that some people impacted by cancer may experience and the emotions that others around them may experience. It gives practical strategies to help cope with a cancer diagnosis, how to tell others and to deal with other people’s reaction to the diagnosis.

Session 3 – The Financial Impact
This session will focus on the potential cost of cancer and some practical ideas on how to decrease the cost. It will also include some tips on how to access funds to assist. You will also get a financial checklist to assist.

Session 4 – Wills, Legalities and Work Rights
This session talks about your rights as a worker and some steps you may need to put in place with your employer to help yourself during your cancer treatment. It also gives some ideas for self-employed workers.
There will be information on wills and some of the paperwork that may be useful in regards to your finances and health care decisions.

Session 5 – Nutrition and Cancer
This session addresses your dietary needs and challenges during cancer and delves into some of the myths, scams and dodgy diets that you may see or hear about.

Session 6 – Sexuality and Intimacy
“Sexual well-being is a central component of quality of life.” People with cancer have reported various concerns following treatment that can lead to a diminished sense of self-worth and confidence. Our guest speaker gives practical suggestions about how to deal with these concerns.

Session 7 – Living Well
Exercise and self-care is an important factor of caring for yourself after a cancer diagnosis. Our guest speaker will talk about exercise for your body and mind and some practical tips to stay motivated.

Session 8 – Cancer Council WA Support
Cancer Council WA offers many support options for people impacted by cancer from our 13 11 20 Information and Support Line to financial assistance and more. We also have a ‘Wellbeing after Cancer’ program that you can access. Our team are here to give you the necessary information and answer your questions.
